(KFVS) – A Milwaukee-based cyber security company says cyber thieves stole 1.2 billion username and password combinations.

A company based in St. Louis that specializes in Cyber Security, Parameter Security, says there’s no way to know if your information has been hacked and the breach is so large, it’s safe to assume you’ve been affected.

The gang targeted people and companies.

Security experts say once the hackers found a person to target, the group tracks their internet history targeting every website he or she might have logged in to.

Dave Chronister with Parameter Security says there are some things you can do now:

  • Change passwords for any website with sensitive information, like credit card numbers or health records, and Social media accounts
  • Make your passwords long and random, using at least 15 characters.
  • Use words not found in the dictionary. Write words backwards.
  • Never reuse a password. If hackers crack into one, they immediately have access to any information you keep online.

Chronister recommends not using apps or word documents to help remember your passwords.

Instead, write it down seal it up and put it in a safe place.

The security company that shared this data, Hold Security, is now willing to let you know if you’re on the list for an annual subscription fee of $120.
